Local Attractions

1
Stirling Castle

Shiel is very well located to explore the decedent world of Scottish royalty at Stirling Castle – the palace atop a volcanic hill (around 30 mins by car). While away the hours around the former royal residence, once home to James IV and Mary Queen of Scots.

Tour the Renaissance Royal Palace, the Great Hall and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum, and learn the castle’s rich history including the coronation of the infant Queen Mary and famous battles like the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

2
Fishing in Loch Leven

Fancy trying your hand at some fly fishing? Organised through The Green Hotel in Kinross, you can experience fly fishing in Scotland with a difference – from one of the fleet of 20 boats on the Loch. Only Loch Leven has its very own strain of brown trout – salmo levenensis. Although this renowned fish has been introduced to waters across the world, it interbreeds freely with native trout and its uniqueness is lost. So if you want to catch the genuine article, you have to visit Loch Leven which remains one of the world’s most famous brown trout fisheries.

Golf

1
St Andrews Golf Club

The famous ‘home’ of golf – one of the oldest golf clubs in the world and where golf has been played for over 600 years. St Andrews produced many of the early champions and figures in the game. Hosts no less than seven courses on the coast (the Scottish coastal winds add to the challenge) including the famous ‘Old Course’. An incredible place to play for the experienced golfer and takes around 50 mins by car from Shiel.

2
Muckart Golf Club

Fantastic local private course just 10 mins away from Shiel with spectacular views. Is generally members only but with some sweet talking they will allow ‘guests’ to have a game – you should book at tee off time beforehand and you must be properly dressed in proper golf attire.

3
Gleneagles Golf Club

Around 25 mins by car from Shiel, Gleneagles hosts some of Scotland’s finest golf. And for good reason – it is truly amazing. Home to many famous championships over the years, Gleneagles is a must for the golf enthusiast.

The course is immaculately kept and the facilities (including spa) are fantastic. You might need to have a chat with your bank manager before booking though – Gleneagles is not the cheapest course to lose a few balls!

Entertainment

1
Blair Drummond Safari Park

Based in Stirling (around 35 mins drive from Shiel), if you fancy a fun family day out with lots of wild animals, then there is no better place than this!

Blair Drummond Safari Park was one of the first safari parks outside Africa. Opened to the public in 1970, it is spread over 120 acres with over 300 animals. The safari park features drive-through reserves, a boat safari, amusements, fantastic large children’s play areas and a petting zoo. Our boys love this place – especially the electric tractors (great for 2-4 year olds!)

2
Pitlochry Festival Theatre

If you fancy an evening of something a little different, then you might consider an evening in Pitlochry (about 60 mins drive from Shiel).

The theatre is unusually located in a small town in pretty much the middle of Scotland – the quality of the shows has drawn a crowd from all over Scotland. People drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Worth checking what’s on before you stay at Shiel and if something takes your fancy, we would suggest you book tickets in advance – especially in the summer. There are dining options in the theatre and in nearby – again we would suggest you book.
